Homeowners themselves can fix many common air conditioning problems, as long as proper caution is used when dealing with electricity. At Timberline Mechanical, we’re happy to help you along any step of the way to assessing what’s wrong with your air conditioner.

First, help improve your energy efficiency by making sure your inside vents are open, and your windows and doors are closed. Next, assess the problem: Is your system running at all? Is your unit on but blowing hot air? Does the problem seem to be the indoor unit, or the outdoor unit? Does the equipment have power and is it clean?

Check out some common air conditioner failures listed below, and work through our troubleshooting checklist before scheduling a service call with an HVAC professional.

Air Conditioner Troubleshooting Checklist – AC Runs But Not Cooling

  • Are windows and doors to outside closed?
  • Are your vents open?
  • Did you try cleaning or changing the filter?
  • Try cleaning around the outdoor compressor.
  • Check the coils to see if ice has formed on or around them. If so, turn off the power to the outdoor unit and run the fan in the indoor unit until the ice melts. When the ice has melted return the unit to normal operation.

If you’ve gone through the checklist and your air conditioner still isn’t working, schedule a service visit with an HVAC professional. We’re here to help!
